Howard " Herb" Luehrs

Howard Herb Luehrs Jr., age 92, of Whiting, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, January 9, 2017. Born in Cleveland, OH, he lived in Jackson and Toms River before moving to Crestwood Manor in Whiting 6 years ago. He was a guidance counselor in the Jackson School District for many years before retiring. He volunteered as a Mediator for the Ocean County Court System and was also a Pastor with the NJ American Baptist Ministry of Reconciliation and a writer of childrens stories. He often wrote stories for the Christian Radio Program, Adventure Pals. Herb was a proud Army Veteran, serving overseas with the 56th General Hospital and106th Infantry Division in WWII during Normandy Beach and The Battle of the Bulge. He also served in the Korean Conflict as a paratrooper and Chaplain with the 82nd Airborne Division. Herb is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Eleanor; his 4 children; Denise (Albert) Plungis of Jackson; Daniel (Carol) Luehrs of Alabama; Debora (Michael) Waxer of California; and Howard (Karen) Luehrs of Indiana; his 8 grandchildren; Tracie, Brian, Daniel, Zachary, Kira, Benjamin, Nelson and Alan; and his 2 great grandchildren; Randy and Meital. A Celebration of Herbs Life will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 11:00am in the forum at Crestwood Manor, 50 Lacey Road Manchester, NJ 08759. In accordance with his wishes, Herb's remains will be interred privately in the Brig. Gen. WC Doyle Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown. In Leiu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the charity of your choice in memory of Herb.
