Daniel Leroy Bragg, affectionately known as Poppy or Grand-Poppy to his family and Dan to his friends, fell asleep in death at the dawn of the day at Community Medical Center, Toms River, NJ on Friday, January 5, 2024 at the age of 90. Born in Washington D.C. on August 19th 1933, Dan was the fourth child out of five siblings born to Mary Lee (Loving) Bragg and Roy Carrington Bragg.
Dan’s love and highest priority was to spend time with his family. He enjoyed telling jokes and sharing funny and interesting life stories. Having a sharp mind, he would solve crosswords and other puzzles as a favorite pass-time. He began developing this skill by daily reading, researching and memorizing words in the dictionary as a child. Daniel enjoyed music and was a drummer in his younger years. Music was always one of his favorite activities and if a Willie Nelson song wasn’t on the venue it was an odd event. One of his fondest hobbies and forms of enjoyment was boating. He loved to be around the water, it was peaceful to him. Dan was a big football fan of the Washington Redskins and personally knew many of the players throughout the years.
Dan was raised in Alexandria VA and graduated from George Washington High School in 1951. He remained in Alexandria until 1978 until he moved his family about 30 minutes away to Burke, VA. After retiring he lived in Centerville VA, Chantilly VA, Dale City VA, Waterloo IA, and then ultimately Forked River NJ in 2020.
Dan served in the US Army Signal Corp in Yokohama Japan from 1956-1958. Dan was a graduate of George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He had a long and distinguished career as an executive banker and retired from First Union Bank (now part of Wells Fargo).
Dan was predeceased by his first wife, Carol Jean (Hamm) Bragg in 2001, and by his second wife, Marlene Ann Bragg in 2020; his son, Daniel L. Bragg Jr in 1961; and by his siblings, Elaine Forbes, Betty Pettit, and Ernest Bragg. He is survived by his loving sons, Dean and his wife Robbin of Forked River NJ and David of Dale City VA; his grandsons, Edward and Thomas; and his brother, Roy C. Bragg Jr. of South Carolina. Dan was also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and close friends who were like family members.
At Dan’s request, services were private.
